My last customer sale before embarking on our week long Boston idyll was to a dreadlocked fellow with a bullring through his nose wearing a white and blue striped painters cap. He wanted to buy book from our dollar cart with his debit card, I informed him of our three dollar minimum on electronic transactions. He accepted this with equanimity and found two more books to put him over the limit.
My first customer upon returning to the shop from said idyll was the same fellow.
After my double take he asked
"You guys have a three dollar minimum on cards, right?"
I'll take it as a good omen.
