Unpublished Austen

Manuscript Auction!

An incredibly rare handwritten manuscript of an unfinished novel by Jane Austen – the only one that is still in private hands – is to appear at auction in London.

In keeping with my recent cogitations on the real vs the immaterial, manuscripts are a good investment. A handwritten one provides an incredible sense of connection to the author, a corrected typescript much less of one, and a modern word processed document none at all.

There was a phase that stuck with me from a review of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, "you can see the fingerprints".

With digital there are no fingerprints, which strikes me as a loss.

Again, not that I'd want to write this thing longhand and transfer it over somehow (although a blog written entirely in longhand and posted via scanned image would be an interesting project for someone else...), just noting it makes the process of creation much more opaque.
