Sean is putting on a show, but Rutger is completely unaffected by the camera, it's like he's looking at you across a table about to say something. That's an amazing talent that very few actors possess, let alone normal people.
You could watch The Godfather a thousand times and never catch a glimpse of the deranged hippy gremlin that drove the production. That's why I love this shot.
This snap sums up Kubrick as a director- the star of all his films, the choreographic mastermind of every shot, however casual seeming, using everyone at hand to get his point across.
