Apparently the owner of Shakespeare & Co. passed away a bit ago.
We made a point to visit during our (much belated) honeymoon years ago, and I had the honor of being mocked by the owner for trying to buy a €1 postcard with a €20 note. Rather than make change he gave me the card for free. I sent it to my co-workers at the store- today it's taped up on the wall behind the counter.
I'm glad his daughter is continuing the fight- it was a terrific old school shop, perilously crowded, haphazardly organized, redolent of the sort of history money cannot buy & plump with esoteric treasures awaiting discovery by enterprising shoppers unafraid of digging into the stacks.
