books: Actual Listings

Found this one on ABE.

Book Condition: Used - Like New. Warren F. Lewis, 1949- Hardback w/ no dj in very good condition. Ex-Lib w/ typical stamps and markings.

In two lines of descriptive text we're given three mutually exclusive conditions to choose from- impressive!

'Used - Like New' is itself contradictory, a mutation of Amazon's pull-down condition menu. Either a book is new, or it isn't.
Does it look new? Then it's new.
Does it have some condition issues that make it obvious someone's read it? That's not new- call it something else.

And for old school booksellers there is no such thing as 'NEW'.
The highest possible grading is Fine.

Then we find out it's missing the DJ...whoops, there goes LIKE NEW!.
Perhaps gripped by some vague sense of responsibility to his potential customers, our mystery seller downgrades his listing to VERY GOOD. A broad category covering the majority of the books I see in a given day, it's hard to go wrong with Very Good.

But wait, he has one more trick up his sleeve....EX-LIBRARY W/TYPICAL STAMPS AND MARKINGS!

Not even Pollyanna would call that 'very good'.
