I held off lamenting the crowd's loud enthusiasm for Rick Perry's record number of executions at his first debate because, you know, DOG BITES MAN. The death penalty appeals to humanity's knee jerk bloodlust, the logic of 'eye for an eye' is easy to grasp and if you ignore the blatant systemic racial and financial biases and the statistical inevitability of executing innocent people it makes a primitive sense.
Perry's record is particularly repellent because he most likely executed an innocent man then actively covered it up, but isn't fundamentally different from GWB's casual approach to state sanctioned murder.
But when they cheer for death due to lack of health insurance, that's tearing at the bottom of the barrel to get at the floor beneath.
Republican voters, these are your fellow travelers.
