Checking today I was startled to find a Corbucci flick I've never seen on streaming, The Mercenary, aka Revenge of a Gunfighter.
Corbucci makes solid Spaghetti Westerns with a pronounced Marxist lean- while they generally fell short of Sergio Leone's genre work, they're leaps and bounds ahead of most others.
It does appear to suffer from one grievous flaw- the streaming version is dubbed.
Ugh.
This is usually reason enough for me to take a film out of the queue- the spectacular Korean mindufck OldBoy was rendered nearly unwatchable on Instant thanks to criminal dubbing- but in this case I'll give it a shot.
Corbucci's personal best Django is also available streaming, also dubbed unfortunately. Django comes closest of all his movies to the sort of transcendence the best of Leone achieves, and is well worth your time. Although again, dubbed, so pick it up on disc if you can.
Not streaming, but well worth checking out is Companeros!, a great, crazy movie on its own merits that also features my all-time favorite Ennio Morricone tune, the title theme. I've never been able to find the soundtrack for this one, but the music absolutely stands out.
And I note one more streaming Sphaghetti Western offering, Navajo Joe. Haven't seen it, but you know any movie with the guts to cast Burt Reynolds as a native american is going to deliver the goods!
