Best of Netflix Streaming: Hal Hartley

He's fallen off since essaying his masterpiece Henry Fool, which seemed to summarize and finally transcend the limitations of his highly mannered, stylized filmmaking and which had me looking for some sort of creative breakthrough in his next outing.

Instead he delivered the cinematic equivalent of prog rock noodling. He'd said everything he had to say but kept making films anyway.

I still love all his early stuff, a decent representative sample of which has recently appeared on Netflix Streaming. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like one of them you'll like them all. It's disappointing that The Amateur & Henry Fool, his two best films aren't available, but both are worth tracking down in the 'real world'.

He's a specialized taste, but if you like his stuff you'll really like his stuff.
