Among the multitudinous consumer benefits of the digital revolution has been a race to the bottom on used CD prices. I've been around for the whole era- I remember seeing a handful of CDs (in cardboard longboxes) behind glass at Cheap Thrills, when it was upstairs above Korbs. I remember when the the industry rationale for their high price was that they cost more to make so they had to charge more.
And hence to the modern age of the iPod triumphant, posing atop a pyramid of slain competitors thusly:
The relevance of this digression is:
Boo Boo's has a large selection of $1 CDs and I had a few unassigned dollars in my pocket during this afternoon's ramble.
And so...The Baxblog Dollar Disc Challenge. Can a humble blogger mine a good musical experience from the dollar rack, or failing that at least mine a few updates from the experience?
Three dollars, three CDs...one dream.
Todays contestants are
New Wave Goes To Hell: a gothic-industrial tribute to the music of the 80's (and hey, check it out- I paid less than Amazon prices!)
The Brand New Heavies: Brother Sister (ditto)
and
Terrence Trent D'arby's Vibrator
rationale:
As previously noted, when in doubt pick up an obscure complication. Plus the first track is a cover of Fade to Grey by Visage, a song I bought on .45 back in the day.
Shelter by the Heavies was in the bro in law's road trip rotation for years, but I've never heard anything else of theirs.
Pelf and I were certain TTD was 'the new Prince' after his debut LP, but like everyone else in the world I somehow missed hearing his follow up.
I'll post the results sometime next week, after lending them a critical ear.
