I should have known.
After my earlier paen to pricing inflexibility, I was fated by retail karma to provide a deep discount. And it began in the least likely way- a young lady asking one of those terrible questions I dread hearing, "where are your REALLY OLD BOOKS?"
I showed her our selection of murky turn of the century lit, mostly priced $5-7.
"Do you have any, like REALLY DISCOUNTED old books?"
Turns out she wants to use them as table markers for her wedding and is looking to buy in bulk.
How can I resist?
"If you buy at least twenty you can have them for $3 each."
"GREAT!"
As I type this she's digging in the stacks, reading off potential titles to her husband to be.
