true customer tales: bemelmans

Older expensively dressed owlish looking guy comes up with a copy of Parsley by Ludwig Bemelmans, best known for the Madeline series. It's a particularly nice copy with a complete dust jacket in a mylar sleeve.

guy: Excuse me, how much is this book?

me: I think we had it priced $50. *double check price* Yep, $50.

guy, stepping back & looking horrified: Why is it SO EXPENSIVE?

me: well, it's a childrens book from the 50's by a collectible author in good shape with a nice dust jacket.

guy: But, but...why is it so expensive?

sigh.

Checking my friend the internet I see that the cheapest copy available is a thrashed ex-library edition for $80. I hope he goes home, looks it up hoping to find one for a dollar and poops his Herman Miller Aeron chair.
