Now, assuming you have a chinless dice geek secreted somewhere in your heart of hearts, which dire opponent would you rather test your mettle against; reptilian pie thief or lighting vomiting dragon?

Not rhetorical at all. It all comes down to risk vs. reward.
If I recall correctly the lightning headed dragon would swallow you whole on a 19-20 and it was far from the only high dangerous encounter... S4, like the entire S series was a good module to "thin the herd" with so to speak
So the real question is what is in the lair of the pie thief? If the intrepid adventurer can expect to fill his bags with old pie tins then perhaps a journey to the Lost Caverns would be the better option...
